What Is Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia refers to the enlargement of breast tissue in men, often caused by hormone imbalances, certain medications, or genetics. Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure we use to remove this excess tissue and create a flatter, more defined chest. We may remove glandular tissue, fatty deposits, or both. With male breast reduction, we reduce volume and restore a more natural chest shape that fits your body. Gynecomastia surgery can make muscle gains more visible and give the chest a more masculine shape.

Preparation

Prior to your male breast reduction, Dr. Mariotti will sit down with you to discuss your goals and explain the details of the procedure so you can feel confident that this is the best solution for you. He will also determine the most appropriate surgical technique for your specific situation, which, in most cases, will involve liposuction.

Before gynecomastia surgery, we ask that you stop smoking and avoid certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin or anti-inflammatories. You may need to get lab testing or a medical evaluation, especially if you have underlying health conditions. Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure and stay with you for the first night. Follow all pre-operative instructions carefully so we can help you reduce the risk of complications and support a smoother recovery.

Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery often involves the removal of excess fat from the chest area. For men struggling with true gynecomastia or enlarged breast glands, Dr. Mariotti can remove these glands in addition to sculpting your chest with the help of liposuction. Your gynecomastia surgery will be performed at our surgery center and typically takes just a few hours for the procedure and initial recovery time. You can plan on returning home later the same day.

During surgery, we make a small incision either around the edge of the areola or within a natural chest fold to keep scarring as discreet as possible. If glandular tissue needs to be removed, we excise it directly, then use liposuction for chest fat reduction to smooth the transition between the chest and upper abdomen. In some cases, we may also tighten or remove a small amount of loose skin, depending on your anatomy and goals.

Recovery

Recovery after male breast reduction is similar to that of liposuction. Most men are able to return to desk jobs within just a few days after their procedure, although Dr. Mariotti will ask that you refrain from performing strenuous exercises or activities for the next few weeks.

As you heal from your procedure, you may notice some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, but these side effects should gradually resolve themselves over the next few days and weeks.

Wearing a compression garment for several days following your male breast reduction can help to minimize swelling and complications as you recover. You can expect to gradually resume physical activity over the next weeks, with Dr. Mariotti’s guidance.

Results

You will notice an immediate difference in the shape of your chest, although some swelling is normal in the first few weeks. As the swelling goes down and your body heals, your chest will gradually look flatter. Most patients see their final results within about three to six months. As long as your weight remains stable and there are no significant hormonal changes, results from male breast reduction can be long-lasting. Wearing your compression garment will support healing and help the skin adjust to your new shape.

Is Male Breast Reduction Right for Me?

Even with a healthy diet plan and exercise routine, some men find that getting rid of excess fatty tissue in their chest area is difficult or even impossible. If this is the case for you, you could be a great candidate for male breast reduction.

You may also be a good candidate if:

  • You feel self-conscious about chest fullness
  • Your chest remains enlarged despite weight loss
  • You are in good health and at a stable weight
  • You are not currently taking medications known to cause gynecomastia

FAQS

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is often related to genetics and/or hormonal imbalances, but it can also be caused by certain medications and obesity.

Is there an age limit for getting gynecomastia surgery?

Generally speaking, it’s best to wait until you are at least 18 years old to consider getting a male breast reduction, as your body may still be developing prior to hitting this milestone.

What should I look for in a male breast reduction plastic surgeon?

Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is one of the most important qualifications to check for when choosing a plastic surgeon. Reading online reviews can also help, as well as looking at before and after photos and meeting with your prospective plastic surgeon in person.

Will I have scars after gynecomastia surgery?

Incisions made during male breast reduction are typically small and inconspicuously placed. Ideally, any scars should heal up to be nearly invisible, although everyone’s recovery experience is a bit different.

How long will my male breast reduction results last?

Any glandular tissue or fatty tissue removed from your chest is gone for good. However, you can still gain weight in the future, so it’s important to maintain healthy eating and exercise habits to enjoy your results long-term.
