Enhance breast volume and shape in Concord, CA

Some procedures aren’t just about changing your appearance or the fashions you fit in—they’re about feeling completely yourself in your own skin. One of the most personal and transformative aesthetic changes for women is the enhancement of the shape and size of the breasts. Breast augmentation uses saline or silicone breast implants to help women enhance their breasts, along with their self-image and confidence.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Mariotti has helped thousands of women from Concord, Walnut Creek and throughout the East Bay achieve breast augmentation results that complement their body type and lifestyle. With his artistic eye and decades of surgical expertise, he creates results that look so natural, people will notice something different about you, but they won’t quite be able to put their finger on what it is.

Dr. Mariotti views plastic surgery as the perfect blend of science and art, and it shows in his results.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a good way to enhance your natural breasts or to help restore them to the volume that they were before weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Everyone’s reasons for wanting a breast augmentation are different, but our commitment to beautiful and harmonious results is always the same. Whether you are looking to restore lost volume, make asymmetrical breasts more even or boost what is already there, this procedure gives you options. We use different types of implants to add volume and shape in a procedure that is personal to your body, your goals and your aesthetic.

Types of Breast Implants

Saline Implants

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. They’re inserted empty and filled after placement, which can mean a slightly smaller incision and greater flexibility for volume adjustments. If a saline implant ever leaks, your body will naturally absorb the fluid. You’ll notice right away and will be able to call us to have the implant replaced.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants tend to feel a little more like natural breast tissue with a soft, smooth and cohesive texture thanks to the silicone center. They come pre-filled, which means the size is selected beforehand and requires a slightly larger incision. These implants are a popular choice for those wanting a natural look and feel. Other names used for this type of implant are Gel, Silicone Gel or Gummy Bear implants.

Other Breast Implant Options

Dr. Mariotti offers a full range of breast implant options so you can feel confident about achieving your personal appearance goals. He’ll work closely with you to decide on the best breast implant size and shape for your figure, as well as discuss the preferred incision placement. Options we may discuss with you include:

Breast Implant Size

Implant size is measured in cubic centimeters (cc), not cup sizes. Options typically range from about 150cc to over 600cc, and your ideal size depends on factors like your body frame, existing breast tissue and aesthetic goals. We’ll help you visualize the possibilities with in-office sizers, so you’re not left guessing what 350cc actually looks like.

Breast Implant Shape

There are two main shapes: round and anatomical (a.k.a. teardrop). Dr Mariotti has found that round implants work for nearly all women. Teardrop shaped implants come with a textured surface which Dr Mariotti does not use.

Breast Implant Profile

Profile refers to how far the implant projects outward from your chest wall — low, moderate, or high. A better way to think about them is how wide or narrow they are. With advances, there are now between seven and 10 different profiles for any given size. A higher profile implant has a narrower base and more projection, while a lower profile is wider with less projection. Dr Mariotti is very good about finding the right profile to match your desires and your chest.

Breast Implant Placement Options

Submuscular

With submuscular placement, the implant sits beneath the pectoral muscle, which can offer a more natural slope and help soften the upper edge of the implant. This option provides added coverage and support. Recovery can involve more initial soreness, but the long-term results are smooth and seamless. In almost all cases, Dr. Mariotti recommends placing the implant beneath the muscle. Submuscular breast implant placement can lower risks for capsular contracture as well as minimize the chances for visible rippling or wrinkling.

Subglandular

In rare cases, we may recommend subglandular placement, which positions the implant above the muscle, just behind the natural breast tissue. It may be right for women with enough breast tissue to provide coverage, avid bodybuilders, or women who have already had previous implants placed above the muscle. The recovery may be quicker since the muscle isn’t involved.

“I am a mother of three school age children and was initially hesitant to get breast augmentation surgery because I was concerned how it may affect them. However, the actual surgery and recovery was so much easier than I anticipated and I am so happy with my results. I would highly recommend Dr. Mariotti and am so thankful I decided to do this for myself!”

Preparation

As your surgery date approaches, a few simple steps can set the stage for a smoother recovery. We may ask you to pause certain medications or supplements that could affect healing and avoid smoking during the weeks before and after surgery. You’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home and ideally stay with you for the first 24 hours. Preparing meals in advance, filling any prescriptions ahead of time and setting up a cozy recovery area with pillows, loose clothing and entertainment can make a big difference. A little prep goes a long way in helping you rest, heal and feel at ease.

Procedure

The day of surgery begins with a warm welcome and a final check-in with your surgical team. We’ll review the plan together one more time, answer any last-minute questions and make sure you feel comfortable before heading into the operating room. General anesthesia is administered so you are asleep throughout the procedure.

Your breast augmentation will be performed at our surgery center and typically takes just a few hours for the procedure and initial recovery time. You can plan on returning home later the same day.

After surgery, you’ll spend time in a recovery area where we’ll monitor you as the anesthesia wears off. You’ll be sent home with a detailed care guide, supportive garments and any necessary prescriptions. Most patients feel groggy at first but are up and moving around gently later that evening.

Recovery

Recovery times after getting breast implants can vary widely. Dr. Mariotti uses a special surgical technique when creating the breast implant pocket that reduces trauma during surgery. This approach, combined with the use of long-lasting local anesthetic around the implant, can help you enjoy a more comfortable recovery. Dr Mariotti is now also giving his breast patients a nerve block (pectoral nerve block) and this has further reduced the recovery. It’s also not unusual for patients to take extra strength Tylenol for discomfort.

Following your breast augmentation, you will go home with some minimal bandaging to cover your incisions. Dr. Mariotti will give you specific breast implant massage instructions to follow.
Any discomfort should be easily controlled with oral pain medication. You can shower and wash your hair the next morning and you should be up and around the next day.

Plan to take between four to seven days off work after breast augmentation. If you have a more active job, plan for two weeks. After that, choosing the special occasion to reveal your new look is up to you!

Results

Swelling and bruising are normal right after surgery, but they begin to fade within the first few weeks. You’ll likely see changes daily as your body heals, though it can take several months for the swelling to completely resolve and for your implants to settle into their final position. This period is often called the “drop and fluff” phase, when your new shape gradually softens and rounds out. While you may notice a difference right away, most patients start enjoying their full results six to eight weeks after surgery. Patience is part of the process, but the payoff is worth it.

Is Breast Augmentation Right for Me?

Most women can see excellent results from breast implants. Some of the reasons women consider breast augmentation include:

  • Small breasts
  • Loss of breast volume due to age or weight loss
  • Asymmetrical breasts

For women who are concerned with sagging or deflated breasts, a combined breast lift with augmentation can improve shape, volume and placement at the same time. This option is ideal when the skin has stretched or the nipple position has shifted downward.

Breast enhancement is also commonly included as part of a mommy makeover. During a mommy makeover, we may include surgeries such as a tummy tuck, liposuction and labiaplasty. Performing multiple surgeries together allows you to combine multiple recoveries into one. We’ll help you explore which combination best fits your goals and timeline.

FAQS

Which incision is best for breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation incision placement depends on the type of implants, your unique needs and personal preference. The most common options are along the breast crease (inframammary incision), along the lower edge of the areola (periareolar, and in the armpit (transaxillary). At our practice, we’ve found the inframammary incision provides the best results for the majority of women. The small scar typically flattens, fades and is often concealed nicely by the fullness of the breast.

Can I still breastfeed after getting breast implants?

While breast augmentation shouldn’t affect your ability to breastfeed, be sure you let Dr. Mariotti know whether this is a concern for you during your consultation. The periareolar incision has the highest chance of disrupting the milk ducts, so a different incision location would be best in this case.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The average cost of breast augmentation in the United States is $3,824, according to 2018 data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. However, this does not include additional costs like anesthesia and operating room facilitiesor the cost of the implant chosen.. The cost of your breast enhancement will depend on a number of factors, including any add-on procedures you might wish to include.

What’s the best way to evaluate breast augmentation plastic surgeons near me?

First, look for board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. During your consultation, ask how many breast augmentations this plastic surgeon has performed in the past. Finally, evaluate the facility for cleanliness, organization and friendly, professional staff.

How do I find the best breast augmentation plastic surgeon?

Schedule a consultation with your top two or three picks. You should be able to establish a rapport with your plastic surgeon and feel comfortable discussing your goals and asking questions.

Will my breast augmentation hurt?

No, you shouldn’t feel a thing during your procedure. Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia.

How should I care for myself after breast augmentation?

The first few days are all about rest, hydration and following the post-op instructions we’ll send you home with. Wearing your support bra as directed helps reduce swelling and encourages your implants to settle into place. Gentle movement, like short walks around the house, promotes circulation and can help prevent stiffness. Be sure to avoid lifting anything heavy or raising your arms too high until we give the green light. Keep meals simple but nutritious, keep the area elevated and lean into rest for the first few days to help your body bounce back more easily.

Should I massage my breasts after breast augmentation?

Yes, proper massage techniques can help aid in the healing process. Dr. Mariotti will give you specific massage instructions as part of your post-op care guidelines.
